Training

Swimming takes place at Balerno High School at 8:15am on Saturday mornings and at the Commonwealth Pool at 8:30 pm on Monday evenings throughout the year. During the summer months groups of members participate in open water swimming at Threipmuir reservoir.

Self run cycle rides take place all year round. During the summer we will typically cycle on a Tuesday and Thursday evening leaving from Juniper Green Bike Shop at 7pm; weather and numbers permitting. There will also be ad-hoc weekend cycle rides. Have a look at the ‘Club Bike Routes’ page for route details.

During the darker evenings (September through April) we run spinning sessions at the EnGage gym at the Napier University Sighthill campus on a Tuesday evening 7:00 pm. The session involves 30 minutes of strength & conditioning training followed by 60 minutes of spinning and stretching exercises.

Our (retro) club turbos are available for members to borrow on a first come, first served basis. Please contact our cycling coordinator, Frank Tooley, if you wish to take up this offer.

Running is mostly self-led with members organising informal runs at times that suit.

On the Saturdays when there are no coached running sessions there will likely be a few club members participating in one of the local 5 km Park Runs.

As well as providing the opportunity for coached and non-coached training the club also run ad-hoc sessions such as yoga, nutrition talks, video swim analysis etc. These are not covered by the membership fee so payment may be required to cover the cost.

Interested in Helping Coach Training Sessions?

As a club, we are willing to help club members gain professional coaching qualifications on an ‘as needed’ basis. We have put in place a process for applying for funding to make it more transparent to all club members and to ensure the club gains a benefit from such funding and qualifications gained. The process for applying for funding is set out in the Coaching Funding policy document:

Having read the policy and you believe you could be eligible, you should complete the ‘Coach Development Support’ form (below) and submit it to the committee. It’s also worth noting that other professional organisations also offer funding to club volunteers where appropriate (Scottish Cycling / Swimming for example), so it may be worth also exploring these options as well.
